Make sure you check slickdeals.net - they will basically post every good price or potential deal that exists.

Using that site I found a 42" Hitachi 1080i for $820 about a month ago.

Fatwallet is good for this too.

Unless you really know what you're doing and what's important to you (or just don't really care about great picture quality), I would avoid the cheapo brands. If you look long enough you can find a really good deal on a nice set, and that goes double if you're willing to wait for and endure the black friday madness.

One last tip: watch sales tax. Tax on a TV can easily run to $100 or $150. Buying online is usually better than buying in-store. But never buy from anyone other than a reputable online dealer.

Its pretty simple.

If money is no object for this, get a 46" Samsung with 120 HZ, it is amazing and easily the best TV picture wise you will find in a standard store. It costs a little over 3000 but well worth it due to the 120 HZ, it is beautiful.

If money is an object get a 47" Vizio, you can usually find one for under 1400.

bright room (natural sunlight)? get an lcd.

otherwise, you could go with either an lcd or a plasma, as lcd PQ and motion blur has improved drastically over the last 2 years.

valuewise, i'd go with a panasonic plasma if you decide you want a plasma, and if you go lcd probably a samsung 1080p. plasmas tend to have a little more visual "pop", but the quality of lcd's has become great, as well.

if it were me buying today, i'd get this:
