Default Best Metal/Hard Rock Bands

I know this thread has probably been done before, but the gayness coming out in El Ds thread has prompted me to bring the metal to the masses. Modern and classic bands are great to mention. Hair metal doesnt count.

I offer:

TOOL: nuff said with these guys

Trivium: little bit unknown but def worth a listen

Chimaira: you have to like these guys

Soulfly: I actually met them and hung out with them a couple times, very very cool and down to earth. They mix in some Brazilian beats that work really well.

All That Remains: Pretty solid band.

SpineShank: Again, another great band that needs to put out some new stuff.

Dry Kill Logic: I think they are working on a new album right now.

Black Sabbath: Almost forgot these guys. The originators of metal.

One band that can fit into this thread and El Ds: Chevelle.

I have set the bar, now feel free to go over and under.

I put it to you now OOT.

I agree with most of your picks, but I haven't heard of All that Remains.

I would suggest Nothingface. Well at least any of there albums Pree-Skeletons.

it seems weird that on your list of metal black sabbath seems out of place...you should include older bands along with them...metallica/slayer etc...

i don't reallly consider tool metal or hard rock, but thats a personal opinion...

soulfly is ok, but sepultura was better...when i saw them a couple years ago they did a bunch of sepultura songs which was cool...

spineshank is ok, not a fan of the leads voice...
dkl was good for the first two albums, but can't really get into the new one....

im a lamb of god fan and i know there are a bunch of mastodon fans here as well...im sure davey will find his way into this thread, and perhaps do some more reviews?

I like Lamb of God a lot, Mastodon not so much.

My favorite band right now is Necrophagist.

I agree that Metallica and Slayer should be on the list as well.

Disturbed and Godsmack: Love these guys but sometimes I swear they are trying to make songs that are much more radio friendly.

I'll add:

Slipknot: See StoneSour

StoneSour: Basically the same bands minus the masks and more melody and singing than screaming and yelling.

I also agree the Sabbath feels out of place compared to todays metal, but they are the ones who really gave metal a kick start. Toni Iommi asking for ways to distort the sound for a bit of a crunch and heavier feel was revolutionary at the time.

I am not even listing all the bands I listen to, at least not yet, I want to see what everyone else is in to as well.

as for slipknot, i know they get a lot of hate cuz they have a gimmick with the masks and such...but i think they are one of the most solid heavy bands out there, all of their albums are awesome imo...second is the best, then first, then the newest...

never liked stone sour...disturbeds first album was good cuz it had a lot of energy and seemed different than a lot of other rock, but they went downhill very fast...godsmacks first and second albums are pretty good, but haven't heard anything after than (i did see sully playing nl at commerce a couple months ago)...seems like a lot of the rock bands that became radio popular around 2000 or so sold out pretty fast, i think staind is a good example, i think their first album is great and he has a very interesting voice, but their second album was such a sellout piece of [censored]...

Thirddan, Are you my long lost step brothers, unlces, cousin former college roomate?

Very similar opinions.

Staind: Such a sad sad fall they have made. Dysfuntion is still one of my favorite albums. Their underground album is good too (cant remember the name right now).
