Also, I think once you're over 18 wearing a tie and no jacket should be forbidden.

[/ QUOTE ]
Dear god yes. If you're not wearing a jacket, do NOT wear a tie. I never mind being overdressed, but if you get there and you're uncomfortable about it, ditch the tie and NOT the jacket.

[/ QUOTE ]
Why is this? I consider myself reasonably well-dressed (certainly much better than most guys), but if you're planning on going without a jacket, why is it worse to go with a tie? Seems to me like the tie would make it more dressed up than going without a tie, if you're going to ditch the jacket? Especially when it's really hot out.

not appropriate for: any formal function
appropriate for: teaching, certain offices, indy rock parties.

I don't even care if it's appropriate. It just looks ridiculous.

QFT. Even if you are a math teacher, do you really want to look like a math teacher?

Wedding will be casual judging by who's getting married, and I think wearing a suit will be the exception.

[/ QUOTE ]

Then just wear a sportscoat and tie. If you're overdressed, you and always take off the coat and/or tie.

[/ QUOTE ]

Meh. It really depends on the people. I went to one recently where ~20% of the people were in suits and i was somewhere in the middle dress wise with a silk shirt and nice slacks. You really are not required to wear a suit or even a sportscoat at a wedding.

And here I thought that little fad died with Bell Biv Devoe. Did you own it from that era or did Ross have a few leftovers that have been forgotten about until now?

Im in agreement with you somewhat, I like the classic look too, but fashion and what is appropriate is defined by what the general population is doing, so if everyone is not wearing suits nowadays (of which they arent) than its ok to not wear a suit, adn claiming it is "wrong" is stupid.

[/ QUOTE ]
Fashion and what is appropriate are two different things. And the last place to look for fashion and what is appropriate is the general public.

dibs, Think of the world as along a continuum of formality and Seattle (and all of the west coast) as being the far end of the informality scale.

Dids,

You can go to Macys and buy a relatively nice charcoal Calvin Klein suit for under $500. It's not a huge investment, and like others have mentioned, it makes you look much more put together than slacks and a blazer.

Dids, I think you are making the mistake of believing that a sportcoat + tie + slacks is equally nice/dressy as a suit. That's not true, a suit is a definite step up.

One example where you should DEFINITELY wear a suit is a job interview. A second is a funeral. A third, to get back on topic, is a WEDDING that is not on the beach.

These are all occasions where it is inappropriate to wear less than a suit, and people who understand how men are supposed to dress will notice.

For example, if I were interviewing two candidates for the same job and one was wearing blazer + tie + khakis and one was wearing a suit, would I hire the suit? Not necessarily, but I'd definitely notice and think the suit had a better understanding of what is appropriate.

Absolutely get a black or navy suit.
Absolutely get it tailored to fit (or simply get it tailor made, doesn't have to be top-end).

You will look ten times better in it than anything else in your wardrobe.

You asked for occasions where it is unacceptable to wear a suit, and I gave three examples. Not sure how I failed at reading, but it seems like you've convinced yourself that your ratty sports coat is always fine. So go with that! Congrats, you dress bad!
