Pre flop raise % = what hand ranges
I started using a HUD and was wondering if you all could help me with a seemingly difficult question. (for me at least)
looking at my opponents pfr stat I can see a random number that ranges usually from 0% to 20%. My question is what are the hand ranges for specific percentages? I feel like my question could possibly be unclear and if so let me know and I will try to clarify. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Pre flop raise % = what hand ranges
well it depends on player of course but if you look at pokerstove and look at the preflop slider that should give you and idea.
5% generally means top 6 starters. AA-JJ and AK. 20% includes a lot of broadway hands, usually pocket pairs 88's and up. Some suited connectors or Axs. |

Re: Pre flop raise % = what hand ranges
An easy quick way to do this is to download pokerstove (google it), and go to the option to select hands. You can drag the slider to a desired percent (or type it in), and see what hands are selected. But 20% is defined a particular way there..that is, my 20% is not your 20% is not her 20%, etc.
edit: i am retarded--smurph says it all in his! |

Re: Pre flop raise % = what hand ranges
I wouldn't get too married to the exact difference between a PRF rate of 5% vs 8%. I think you can break it down more into 2 or 3 different groups:
0 > x% Nit, doesn't raise crap, doesn't take advantage of position x% > y% Bastard, doesn't raise crap much, takes advantage of position y% > z% You* positionally aware which leads to raising crap more often, raise can mean more than the nuts. * Or whoever, average 2+2 player, if there is such a beast. |

Re: Pre flop raise % = what hand ranges
I basically agree with kerowo because unless we are playing a regular then we wont get that many hands on them to narrow VPIP/PFR down to a specific number with that much confidence but we can still use the numbers with caution.
Ignoring small sample sizes and because i do find that in offpeak times I often encounter the same hardcore players who I have many hundreds of hands on.....one way which i find useful when thinking about peoples VPIP/PFR ranges is to start with the ranges that I know best and adjust from there. The two ranges that I know best are a. SSHE chart range b. My current range raising as per SSHE in my experience gets a PFR around 7-8%. My current PFR is between 10-11%. Once I think like this it becomes easier to look at someones PFR, their position and the current table and to think about what I would raise with in their position whilst adding or subtracting hands from that range based on their stats. That all sounds like a mouthful but it seems to work for me. |
