just relate it to video games. many people spend hours doing that and they don't get sent to therapists. the video game that you play pays you, though.

once you build up a 'roll, go on monkey tilt, move up to nosebleeds and lose everything then you'll consider getting help.

my parents wanted to do the same [censored] for me my Jr y ear of college when i was makin like 500 a week. When id come home on xmas break or whatever they said id play too much and get pissed... The UIEGA..
I quit poker all together, they were happy till i told them i ran up a 5k credit card debt cause i couldnt give up my "old life sytle"... after that they made sure i played atleast 2 hrs a day.

okay since the interwebs is such serious bizness it appears... here's a more straight and narrow answer. (and yeah its going to basically mirror the other excellent serious answers already given)

OP- I can understand the apprehension etc, but having been thru various stages of "therapy" in my life I can tell you you will likely get exactly out of it what you want/choose.
Your parents are paying for something they hope will help you in some way.
Those motivations don't have to be yours. Nor do they have to necessarily collide with yours.
Take the time to talk about the things you want to talk about and not feel like it's some intervention only about poker.
Don't go into it thinking you have to defend why you like playing poker and you may get more out of it than you think. Participate and find out what that is.

OP-do research and ask to pick the therapist, or, at least be involved in the selection process.

remember you are hiring someone to be of service to you.

you dont have to "account" to anyone.
a good therapist doesnt judge, its only "bad" if it feels bad to you.

any good therapist will treat you for what YOU came in for, not, what your parents sent you there to be treated for.

also, a good therapist will fire you if you really dont want to be there and arent doing the work.

firing works both ways.

imho i think everyone here whos said use it as an opportunity, is correct. as long as you pick a good therapist.

re: poker, if you are asked about the financial side, you can always answer the question with the question, "how much do you make?"

that question should point up how rude it is to ask someone about their finances!

otoh in therapy it is extremely impolite to answer a Q w/a Q
