Default Hooking up 2 monitors to a laptop

I need to hook up a second monitor to my laptop, I don't want this monitor to be a mirror, how is this done?

all you should have to do is plug it into the VGA adapter on the laptop and then right click on your desktop, go to properties...and choose the 2nd monitor and check "extend my desktop onto this monitor"

note: on some laptops you may need to reboot after plugging the monitor in before seeing it in the options.
