Default Low Limit B&M Stud - How does it play?

Although I play a lot of HE at casinos, I have never played stud. I have been playing a lot of stud online recently. Is the transition from online stud to B&M stud the same as with HE? Lots of nits at the low limits that complain if you raise too much?

So incredibly tight, you will not believe it. Plus lots of old folks whine when you preflop raise.

Most of the low limit games I have played have been populated by a much older range of players (at least on the east coast) than the HE games. So there are lots of rocks playing the 1-5 games.

The time or two that I played 5-10, were a little better, but still very tight with out a lot of raising.

i have had a completely opposite experience. It always seems to be 5-6 calling 3rd every hand and 3-4 to the river on most.

Foxwoods $1-3 is like this. But it's anted more in line for a $75/150 game (50c, 1/6 big bet I suppose you'd say) so loose play on 3rd is somewhat appropriate.

I've started donking off money in the $1-5 when I get bored with $1-2 NLHE. Certainly tighter though not tight, certainly more aggressive, certainly better anted. And people are observant of how tight i'm playing, so I can get some bluffs and take down the pot by 5th sometimes.

I think a lot depends up on where you play.

At my local casino, The Oaks in Emeryville, low limit is 2/4 and has a high ante of .50 and bring in of $1, so it is pretty loose.

Because of the rake, most regulars play in the 4/8 game which also has .50 ante and $1 bring in. This game plays more like a 'normal' stud game.

On the other hand, I have played in Nevada where as the other poster said, "Incredibly Tight" is the name of the game. But those games were 1-4 with no ante.

My suggestion would be to watch the game from the rail for a while.

Thanks Todd and dha, I think watching from the rail is the best idea until I get an idea for the table. I am going to AC this weekend, any places you recommend for low limit stud?

there is nowhere great from my experience for low limit. the trop has a 5-10 and a 1-5. I havent been to the new borgata room yet so I dont know the story there.
Basically you are hoping for a couple mid-30s-40s drunk guys there for the weekend who played kitchen table stud growing up. They can be anywhere. I've sat in a good 1-5 at ballys before with some nuts (if you can handle the smoking). The one time i played the 1-5 at the taj it was awful and full of retirees who spent more time walking around and asking for comps then playing.

IMHO the Trop $5-10 game is REAL good (not too rocky), Taj is tighter. Lots of chasers/gamboolers and less experienced stud players at the Trop compared to Taj. I'd avoid $1/5 anywhere unless it's Fri./Sat. night from 9PM-4AM. Then you'll get the 30's-50's drunks/casual players. Despite what people claim, you can make $ at 1/5 in this type of game. I've heard places like Bally's and Harrah's are good for these types of games on the weekends.

I've read that the Borgata is spreading stud in the new room, definitely $10/20. I'm not sure about 1/5 or 5/10.

Great, thanks for everyone's input. Hopefully I will have something to add to the comments next week.

I played a lot of low limit at the Trop back in teh day. It really was a rock garden. But weekend would be expected to loosen up.

Plus, if it is a rock garden, you might be able to dominate the table by playing super agro. Just respect the 'old folks' calls like you would respect someone elses reraises. They really do play a sick, tight passive game.

I have had people call the river with a full house, cuz the pair I was showing was higher then their trips. Didnt want to risk it w/ a raise.

I would say sit in a 5-10 if you roll will allow it. Play wicked frickin tight until you are comfortable with the table and how they are playing.

Have a boatload of fun, and definately let us know how it goes.

Todd
