No single book, or any collection of books, is going to make you a winning player.

[/ QUOTE ]

If someone reads Bill Chen's book, and takes the time to re-read it until he understands it... then I don't understand how he could NOT be a winning player.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's my point. Most people aren't going to take the time to really really read through the material. After three reads they walk into a casino and wonder what's going wrong. Rather than blame themselves, they blame the book.

I haven't read Math of Poker yet, but.... wait a minute.

Oh, yeah I forgot about Ace on the river. That book is a joke, it's just a coffee table book with a lot of nice pictures. It blows big time and I am always amazed at how many people rave about it.

Winning low limit hold 'em was probably one of the best absolute beginners books but now I think Ed Millers Getting started in hold 'em is better. I don't consider ITH a beginners book in any case and I think it's wrong to lump it in with WLLH.

I don't know if anyone on here has read Johnny Chans million dollar hold 'em but that one is an absolute stinker as well and I have heard some people singing its praises.

Was it really? The first edition, which I think came out in 1995, was significantly revised twice.

Best wishes,

This is just like the typical donk that plays a suited connector UTG with 3 aggressive players behind, wins the pot and claims to be a great poker player who outplayed everyone.

Sometimes it best to get to level 2 or 3 thinking if you can - level 4 wouldn't hurt. You might want to rethink what Barry is trying to tell poker players in his book. It is not a strategy book. It is just what the title says - a "guide" for advanced players. It has a a ton of hidden messages of why good solid poker players fail and what they should or should not do to succeed. Don't be like the UTG donk - think deeper.

Mason:

Adman seems to be someone who seems to think everything is the best book ever written. Link.

To give him credit he did previously say this about Getting Started in Hold'em: "I agree with the reviewer that said that this book has replaced Lee Jones' book as the best introductory text for beginning players"

I'm working to get a 2+2 posting coach for him, no worries - he will become a cynic soon enough. I think Microbob would be perfect, don't you?
