Default Overpair on a dangerous board, I do bad?

This hand is pretty simple....probably my fifth/sixth at the table, so readless...I was excited until he called the turn bet after the king showed up, and then i pretty much went into "hand over" mode.

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.25/$0.50 Blinds - 6 Players - (LegoPoker Hand History Converter)

Hero (SB): $48.75
BB: $50.00
UTG: $49.60
MP: $33.25
CO: $35.15
BTN: $72.50

Preflop: Hero is dealt Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (6 Players)
3 folds, <font color="red">BTN raises to $1.50</font>, <font color="red">Hero raises to $5.00</font>, BB folds, BTN calls $3.50

Flop: ($10.50) 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 Players)
<font color="red">Hero bets $6.00</font>, BTN calls $6.00

Turn: ($22.50) K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 Players)
<font color="red">Hero bets $11.00</font>, BTN calls $11.00

River: ($44.50) 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 Players)
Hero checks, <font color="red">BTN bets $16.50</font>, Hero folds
Uncalled bet of $16.50 returned to BTN

Pot Size: $44.50 ($2.20 Rake)

So this officially ends my run at poker for now, just because after three years of constant reading and practice i still suck, and the main problem is my incessant battle with winning $2-3 pots and then losing it all back and more in situations like this.

Incessant

I kid you not.

Thanks in advance for your replies, I won't trouble you guys anymore.

bet bigger on the flop. villain probably has a big diamond which didn't hit. however. could easily have AK with a d, so you're beat. TT with a d, also a possibility and it made it on the river. maybe villain setted up. the only hands that take this line with you ahead are AdQ/J and maybe JJ. i think that you could either fold or call that river. others will prolly give better advice.

I probably call the river and hope to see AdJc or something, but the board does now suck for your hand, and I certainly wouldn't expect to get rich on my river call, on average. It seems close to me.

In any event, I didn't add much. I think rothko summed up Villain's hand possibilities pretty well.
