Just heard news from my sister...she just got into a Harvard PhD in public health with the best possible funding package. Craziness because apparently funding in public health is really, really rare (0/17 and 2/9 kids in the two public health departments last year had funding).

One of my brothers has a PhD in biochem from Harvard, which means 50% of the kids in my immediate family will (hopefully) have PhDs from Harvard.

beat: I am a gradschool dropout at 22.

beat: even with a PhD in public health she will probably be making like 45-50k a year as a researcher. Conversely, people coming out of a biochem phd can make like 6 figures easily in the pharmaceutical industry.

Apparently noone cares about public health even though it is insanely important; all the research money goes to bombs and drug research, I guess. Viagra>>>>>>>>>>> >Africa problems.
