c/c is bad here, board is dry, so i really prefer a cbet and shutdown if called

I would bet more preflop. you are oop , so i make it about 25-28.

on flop, I often had the same problem

Don't we have higher fold equity against his 88-JJ if we bet the flop stronger? I guess we all would bet like $40 if we had AA/KK. I know the flop is so dry but still...

I'd raise preflop a little bit more to $25 or so. Everything else I'd play the same.

I never know what to do in these spots. Check-fold? if i check and he checks behind, lead turn? check-raise? c-bet big? c-bet 1/2 pot? 2/3? so lost.

OP nailed it before he started. Mixing it up from blinds with quirky min-raises pf allows for c/r for same price on flop. In addition the lead out bet on flop is cheaper, looks weaker and can mix up button when the flop hits you. As played fine.
