Friend busted for child porn, wtf?

Closest I came to someone was a camp couselor. I was in his cabin one year with about 6 other boys. We were all about 12-14. He seemed like a cool guy, just a little too touchy sometimes so the slightly older kids would rag on him for being a pedo. Turns out about two years later that he was actually formally accused and convicted. Although they didn't release all the details, I know he had child porn on his computer, the same computer he would use all the time in the room with us.

The thing that creeped me out the most was that a few times when he was sitting next to me, he would joke around with me and just casually put his arms around me. When he teased me he would actually say that he was just trying to "get a rise out of me." The whole time he was the one getting the rise. That was highly disturbing.

I think the most bizarre thing was this kid I went to high school with. After he graduated, he and some buddy of his break into a house... rape and old lady - killing her. Then they steal her fridge(!?!?)... and end up getting chased by the cops. This guy's buddy ends up shooting himself in the face, while the kid I knew goes to jail for a very long time.

The newspapers were all over it, pictures of him all over the local press. The only pic of him they seemed to use was him in his football jersey. It weirded me out because it was the same jersey I wore the previous year. When reporters talked to teachers and stuff - they always said he was 'a good kid'. BS, if there was a kid that was destined to be in jail for the rest of his life... it'd be him.

On a side note (to go with the pedo stories)... my fiance was watching the news the other night and saw a guy who got booked for child porn. The same guy we bought our condo from a year and a half ago. *shudder* He apparently runs a kids gymnastics studio.

I just looked it up and am amazed by how many states have 16 as the age of sexual consent. Seems a little young to me. But, maybe just cuz I grew up with it at 18.

It is pretty arbitrary, and it's stupid.

There's no way to avoid drawing arbitrary lines however. I think the solution is to draw more lines.

If the age of consent is 17, for example, I think a good scheme for penalties would be something like:
15-16: offense level 1*
13-14: offense level 2
12 or younger: offense level 3

*I think having offense level 1 as a misdemeanor crime and not a felony would be appropriate, unless it is a 2nd offense.

A guy a know got arrested after streaking at a highschool football game. He got immediately expelled, sentanced to a huge amount of community service, and the really ridiculous kicker, got put on the sex offender list.

Friend got busted for videotaping his room-mate & room-mate's girlfriend in the shower together with a pin-hole camera. He also had taped his own girlfriend in the shower, and him and his girlfriend having sex, all without her knowledge.
