You mean marginal utility. Your VORP comment makes little sense.

VORP is a measure of marginal utility.

You are right. Lemme clarify on what I meant. The replacement level isn't the same as what VORP would be. Like in a 5 team league. Replacement level would be ~5-7th best person at the position (depending on who's getting hoarded, fanboyism etc). So you'd wanna see the biggest jump in VORP more than the VORP itself. Example with random numbers:

Utley 100
Cano 50
Weeks 40

Pujols 200
Ortiz 190
Random 170

Whoever takes Utley will win regardless of the other position.

I guess I phrased my original response poorly in that he wasn't wrong, but hitting up BP and looking for the highest VORPs wouldn't be correct since significant adjustments need to occur.

Oh, well, yeah, you just have to adjust your idea of what the "replacement" player actually is.

JoA,

Yeah... I wasn't being very precise with what I originally meant. Also scoring adjustments need to be made too, but thats kinda obvious. But yeah... The biggest difference in small leagues is in positions where one player is much better than the next 3-10 players, instead of it being pretty linear or fatter at the top.

Zod,

You got the idea. Hamels chance of out performing his dollar value is slim compared to Reyes and Hart. Throwing the unknown third player next year creates a huge potential value.

Hamels will be a $20 player next year, and he won't perform much below/above that. But the three players you are replacing him with could be worth a total of $30+ in value while you are only paying $20 for them.

Thremp,

It seems like we agree we are just differing on the word choices.

When I said VORP I didn't mean it in the BP stat sense, but in the literal Value Over Replacement Player sense.
