Avery needs more than 1.5 seasons of success to call him better than Riley.

Bulldog - Avery did a great job this year as we all know... but experience and an insane coaching track record does count for something.

I'm gonna go with the players (Shaq, All-Star games, etc) that swear that Riles is an amazing coach. This is the same Shaq that stood so loyally next to P-Jax for years. Riles must be an amazing motivator and coach. He's got my vote.

4 titles (could be wrong), 3 winning teams for the most part during his stay and now taking the Heat to the finals has gotta be more impressive than Avery Johnson's 1 great season (so far). If Avery continues to be the little general that he is maybe he could be better than Riley but there's no way I'd vote for him right now.

They've both proven that they're great coaches, I don't think there's a way to say for sure who is the better of them, but Riley has a ton of evidence in his favor while Avery doesn't really have much. Experience is another factor in Riley's favor. Riley is the educated guess there.

Ask this again in 5 years and it might be meaningful.

Riley has been good for two decades coaching three different teams of various styles. Avery has coached one full season, in which he did a great job. Which is greater? My answer lies in sample size.
