Default New York Islanders news

The Isles are having a press conference on Thursday to name new head coach, Ted Nolan and new GM, Neil Smith (WTF?!). Smith is an interesting choice, but I guess it's hard to get much worse than Milbury.

Here's the report.

I dont like Neil Smith, but thats prolly more due to his Ranger affiliation.

I love the Nolan hiring, ive wanted him since Buffalo blacklisted him 9 years ago.

Anyone have more info on Neil Smith?

yeah, i did not get that, anyone know why he had like a million interviews for a number of coaching jobs and never got one till now?

The Neil Smith signing is horrid. Whatever the decide to do with Yashin, Smith will manage to screw that up as badly as possible.

He allegedly drove Muckler out of Buffalo. Now GM would want to hire him because they fear they would be putting their neck on the line.

I agree, I liked him in Buffalo. Last year, this team seemed to lack "character" that the pre-lockout teams had. I think this partially had to do with how crappy Sterling was and also the loss of Peca. Hopefully Nolan can bring some success to the Island.

I don't understand the hate for Neil Smith. He was a very good GM with the Rangers. They were idiots (1) to not allow him to re-build the team when it came time to do that and (2) to fire him.

I'm an Isles fan, and very excited, if for no other reason, just to see a fresh face. Triple that excitement if Smith's wife looks remotely as well as she did 12 years ago.

Rangers fired Smith but he was forced to do a lot of [censored] things - rumor is that Dolan signed Kamensky and Fleury.. The Pavel Brendl debacle sealed his fate.

I don't think Smith is particularly good or bad but he deserves another shot. He is certainly better than Milbury.

Nolan was overrated as a coach - let's see how it goes for him the second time around.

I 100% completely agree with this statement. Smith might not be the savior for the Isles, but he is certainly better than Milbury and I would expect him to put together a team that could actually compete for a playoff spot.
