But to say that democracy existed in ancient Greece is slightly misleading, as the democracy practiced there was far different from what most of us consider to be critical features of modern liberal democracy, such as guaranteed fundamental rights, universal suffrage, checks and balances on governmental power via separation of powers, and the scaling of representative government from a single city-state to nations of millions of disparate individuals. |
