Al, I like the look of the Barney's private label shoes quite a bit generally. I think that like most of their stuff, they have a much better level of taste than other department stores and their private label merchandise reflects that. I haven't looked at their shoes in a long time so I don't know about construction. Regardless, they don't have the cachet of their other brands so they can often be bought for a song come sale time. A post on Styleforum or a similar site will tell you who actually makes the shoes.

I'm not so keen on Cole Haan. I don't much like the newer styles and their soles look increasingly cheap and glued on. I do like the AEs in the picture and almost bought a pair.

For the neighborhood of Magli prices, here are some shoes I like:

Gravati
Heschung

Going up in price but not quite stratospheric, I'm very fond of Weston.

Those Allen Edmonds shoes(pretty much all of them) look really good to me. Might get a pair to try out.

DaveR - thanks, good stuff, will def check out your recs. I really don't mind paying a lot for dress shoes, feel like with proper care you get alot of value out of them.

I haven't bought Cole Haans in a while - I bought a pair a while ago (they're pretty much dead now) I liked because they have a Nike air sole, so it was really comfortable. It was a nice black casual, could be dressed up shoe. I just looked at their Fall collection for dress shoes, agreed, not that hot, imo.

Ikaika - yeah I just looked at the new fall launch for Allen Edmonds. Very good looking. What do you guys think of the "Manhattan"?

[/ QUOTE ]I'd never been a fan of wholecut shoes. But a guy I worked with last summer wore some and I thought they looked nice. I also like the ones in your link.

The new Allen-Edmonds models seem to have a sleeker silhouette.

Evanston

The website mentions it has a elongated toe.

Jumping on the AE bandwagon, I bought the AE Kennett.

Since they were seconds I got them for $50, but I can't tell what was wrong with them.

Al, I tend to think AEs have bulbous toes compared to European shoes and when the uppers are plain they stand out more, but those look pretty good for AEs.
