Comm 40: I donk vs Gabe and get raised
Good game last night.
2+2'er Gabe posts in the CO. It's folded to him and he raises. I consider re-raising with Ad7d in the SB but decide to call. Terrible BB calls as well. Flop: 853 w/ 2 spades Checked around. Turn: 6 (offsuit) I bet, BB folds, Gabe raises. I call. River: Ts I check and Gabe bets. He's looking quite stoic, like one of those statues of a general riding a horse that you sometimes see in a park. Anyone call? Anyone c/r bluff? How bad was my preflop play, too? |

Re: Comm 40: I donk vs Gabe and get raised
im not really sure how gabe plays but I 3bet preflop and call the river. I think he's got something like J4, J9, Q7 enough to call. If hes good his preflop range is any 2 and when he checks the flop his range is heavily weighted towards nonpairs and weighted away from Ax as well. His most likely hand after the preflop/flop action imo is something like JT. So on the turn its likely he either picked up a pair or a draw and when u get to the river ur getting the right price to call and hope it was a draw.

Re: Comm 40: I donk vs Gabe and get raised
The lack of a preflop 3-bet is a definite mistake, unless the BB will absolutely never fold.
His check on the flop is really strange; if he has some sort of strong hand (including AK/AQ on this board) why would he check when nobody gives a poster credit for anything? I think he probably has some sort of medium ace like yours and decides that he's vulnerable to getting bluffed off the pot. When he raises the turn, his hand feels to me a lot like A9/A6/A7/A4, and then he declines the free showdown thinking that he might get you to fold a small pair (or makes a thin value bet with A6). I think there's definitely some merit to a check-raise, although I'd actually rather that the flush card hadn't fallen. I also think there's an argument for 3-betting the turn. |

Re: Comm 40: I donk vs Gabe and get raised
the type of player who checks A4/A7/A9 on the flop doesn't seem like the same type who would raise with it on the turn.
Would u agree nate? |

and weighted away from Ax as well. [/ QUOTE ] I disagree. This board isn't *that* coordinated (something like 985 would be different) and so if he has some hand that probably needs to bluff to win, I think he's going to go ahead and bluff with it. |

[/ QUOTE ] In my experience the flop check-behind is followed by a turn raise fairly often. The difference between Gabe and some online donk may be that Gabe is smart enough to follow through with a bluff or a thin value bet on the river. |

Re: Comm 40: I donk vs Gabe and get raised
you should call here. he's too likely to have some sort of straight draw that missed.

Stoic Gabe = bluff. Pick him off.

Re: Comm 40: I donk vs Gabe and get raised
i like a turn 3-bet and i call river also... i think a c/r is getting too fancy and you're not getting nearly the right price to go for it...

You sure it was our Gabe? I would have preferred to see you bet the river. Hard, then, for Gabe to call with something like K-6s. Pre-flop, better, I think, to take the initiative and possibly eliminate the big blind with a 3-bet. |
