Re: Players announce they are going to check it down?
You say, "hey, c'mon guys, one player to a hand here. I know it's standard to check it down, but it's bad form to talk about it. Thanks."
Or you relax and let it go, because once it was talked about once, everyone will realize that's what they should do and will do it anyway. It's a friendly home game, this is very minor. |

Re: Players announce they are going to check it down?
First of all, these guys are idiots for checking it down. If I am one of the players in this pot, there is no way I'm agreeing to check it down. If I have a made hand than is vulnerable to a draw, I'm going to bet it. There are at least 5BB in that pot and if I can win it, I will.
In general, what they did was a breech of poker etiquette. Depending on the house rules, this can result in warning, penalty, disqualification or removal from the house. These sort of rules are generally found and enforced in casinos and other official venues. At home games, these rules can vary widely, or in most cases, not even be laid out properly beforehand. Personally, I would simply mention that verbally declaring a check down is a breach of poker ettiquette that has consequences in most casinos. If you persue this further, you may come off as a nit and then you would be creating a -EV situation out of something that is really mild in the first place. |

Re: Players announce they are going to check it down?
I was in a game several weeks ago where this almost happened. I was all in against two players (both good buddies of mine). One (experienced) looked at the other (playing to drink and have fun) and said "ya know what we should do". I said Steve, STFU. He has no idea what he should do and I don't need you giving him instructions. He said, you're right - sorry about that.
We don't play for alot of money but we do get bragging rights until the next game. I don't know what I would have done against players I didn't know... |
