Default Vista problem: directory name invalid

I had to buy a new computer and had little choice but Vista (or wait for one to be built). I am paying the price.

I have downloaded the usual suspects and get "the directory name is invalid" when I try to run downloaded programs. Firefox works but crashes. Google Toolbar works. Microsoft's Defender Program for Vista will not load. Many others will not load.

Also, downloads from microsoft.com work come in about 8x faster than majorgeeks.

Did I get a borked copy of Vista or is this the way it's gonna be? If so I will return it and install XP on a custom box.

Matt

Did you uninstall all the stuff that came pre-installed on the box? That may help. Also, try running the aps as admin from right-clicking on the menu item or icon to launch the program. The only problem I'm having is PAHUD is a little flakey and can't be run in flicker free mode.
