Default Argument with co-worker

A little background first. Im a dispatcher for security at a hospital. My shift starts at 700AM and the person I relieve gets off at 730AM. The coworker I am relieving is pretty much a lazy bonehead. His attendance leaves much to be desired as does mine. I only work Saturday and Sunday mornings and am late maybe 10% of the days. Not too great but my boss seems to like me a lot as I am very good with what I do.

Yesterday I win a tourney and end up taking my friends to the local strip club. We end up staying later than expected and I end up coming into work at 745. Coworker has to stay an extra 15 mins. When I walk in he starts complaining about me being late. Im still a little buzzed from the night before and start talking some crap back to him letting him know that he's not perfect either. Right as a doctor comes in he tells I need to go to Detox in front of the doctor. I thought that was a low blow and defintitely shouldnt have been said in front of another person. It got very close to getting physical, I would probably get my ass kicked since he is a big black dude that says he knows karate.

Pretty boring sorry, but Im wondering what would best thing to do?

Never thought of that. I don't see how I was in the wrong though. Everyone comes in late one in a while and this guy is late more than me. Where do you think I went wrong?

But they don't act like it's okay if challenged. And they don't show up under the influence. And responsible people don't go out drinking heavily the night before a shift that starts at 7:00.

You showed up late and acted like you're entitled to be late with no consequences. Grow up.

LOL, seriously???

YOU were late. 45 min late! Do you guys have shifts that overlap by 30 min for a reason? Like to discuss issues for the day or something?

PLUS, you came to work drunk/buzzed!!!

Regardless of the fact that your coworker is "not perfect either", you were in the wrong here. Your correct line would be to apologize. Instead you "start talking crap back to him". That was probably the wrong way to act, even if your coworker is not perfect either.

That said, your coworker mentioning the detox in front of the doctor did seem like a DBag move as you mention. Although, it sounds like you could probably use it.

As it stands, you were way more in the wrong than your coworker.
