That said, it sucks that EVERY cat or kitten thread has to devolve into the declawing debate

[/ QUOTE ]
This is weird. I hadn't even HEARD of declawing until this thread. It is not common at all (not legal?) in the UK.

Mine didn't.

I like your cat. Trying to think up a suitable caption for that photo.

It's illegal (except for medical reasons) here in the UK and very rare because of that. Considered animal cruelty in most Euro countries.

I'd trust a vet to tell me what's good for an animal. Every vet I've ever known (all 4 or 5 of them) says declawing is horrid animal abuse. A few have even had signs in their lobbies stating "We will not perform declawing."

How many of you people who are complaining about it being so mean to Cats to declaw them went out and had some Bacon/Hamburger/Steak recently. Seems pretty messed to butcher those animals for food too. You shouldn't just decide to save some animals from pain/suffering because they are cute. Either you should oppose all animal mistreatment, or you should be ok with any any mistreatment that has some sort of purpose. I certainly agree that random maiming of animals is wrong. But if there is a reason and a purpose behind the procedure, than I don't see a problem with it. If it's an inside cat, it doesn't need it's claws.

As for declawing being illegal in some countries, who cares. It's illegal to be out alone as a woman in some countries. Some laws are just lame, it's your cat, rip off it's claws if you want.

There is no reason or purpose beyond hurting the animal for your own self interest. I suppose you're also in favor of a guy hacking off his daughter's clitoris because it makes him uncomfortable to think she'd ever want sex? I mean, it's not like she really needs it to be a functioning person, right?

Kittens are cute and it's awesome b/c you get to raise them while they are at their most impressionable, but if you're busy you may want to consider getting a grown cat. We shopped around until we found a really friendly one and brought him home (he's 3 years old). He is far and away the friendliest cat I've ever met. He snuggles with me every night and every day that I work from home. He is incredibly low maintenance too... we can leave him at home alone for days at a time. I've had some kittens that got on my nerves a lot - crying through the night and stuff. It's hard to predict.

Poor example, IMO. Happens all the time. Why is one "mutilation" while the other is common place, if both cats live a perfectly normal and healthy indoor life after either procedure?

My cat's not declawed but boy does he [censored] up our furniture.
