Default What\'s going to happen to A-Rod after this year?

Please don't flame me for this, I thought it was a valid conversation piece.

Ok this has honestly, as a Yankee fan, been bothering me. I've been reading everywhere that "no matter what happens" A-Rod will be voiding the last 3 years of his contract and signing a new one.

The first scenario is that he has a blockbuster year. While he won't get the average 26-27 mil a year like he did before, he will get a long term contract worth a lot of money. Do the Yankees give him this contract? Does someone else?

The second scenario is he has a bad year. What constitutes a bad year for A-Rod? Who knows? I was perfectly happy with what he gave the Yankees last year, with the organization only shelling out 16 mil for him. Most of the fans and media, however, were not. Will he have another year similar to or worse than last year and not be able to take the heat anymore? Void his contract and go elsewhere? He'll still get good money as anyone with two ounces of brain matter knows his year last year was very, very good.

I am also going to assume any significant improvement over this past year will put him in contention for the MVP award.

Personally, I hope no matter what happens he chooses not to void his contract and stays with the Yanks. If the Yanks have to negotiate a new contract after a blockbuster year, it will almost certainly be [censored] on the back end for the Yankees. Oh well. Such is baseball these days.

I didn't know he was planning on voiding the contact no matter what. I hope not. I agree, I thought he had a decent year. But I thought his contract stated he would be the highest paid player in MLB by $1 million over the next highest paid? Maybe I am wrong though.

Yeah, I recall his contract having a similar clause in it as franchise players in football. Hang on, let me look it up....

[ QUOTE ]
# Rodriguez may void after 2007
# Rodriguez may void after 2008 or 2009 unless club increases 2009-10 salary by $5M/year or $1M more than highest-paid MLB position player

[/ QUOTE ]

He can void after this season for sure or stay with the club and then void after 2008 if they don't meet the demands. However, if the market stays ridiculous in next season's FA period, then he might just void immediately or use it as leverage to re-negotiate./

He def voids this year regardless of how he plays.
I don't see how he doesn't especially with Boras as his agent.

But if he has a "poor" year, and voids the contract; people will say he did it because he can't handle the pressure of NY. Would A-Rod tarnish his image like that? Would Boras want him to if it means making less money in 2008?

Boras doesn't make the decisions, the client does. Otherwise Matsuzaka would not have taken the Red Sox offer, and waited out the two years it would take to get a $140M deal.

ARod isn't going to give in to his NY critics by voiding.

i wouldn't suffer for three more years AND give up millions just to make a point to people who will never like me anyway. but he does say he wants a ring, and if he's sincere about that, maybe he'll stick around.

My guess is A-Rod will end up voiding the contract in favor of something like 8 years at 20-22MM per. Thus if he's really unhappy and has to leave NY, he can spin it to be in his best interests. And if the market stays like it is, it actually WOULD be in his best interests, whether he stays with NYY or not.

If Arod has a "bad" year aka the Yankees dont win the WS and thus its Arod's fault. He certainly voids.
A The Yankees would probably like him to
B Arod and his wife family would want him to
C If Arod has a ok year he still gets a HUUUUUGGGE contract regardless.

The only way I see Arod not voiding and being with the Yankees in 2008 is if the Yankees win the WS and Arod is a big part of the reason why it happens in the postseason.

The Yankees agree to an extension and he stays with the Yanks--I figure he is less than 30% of wearing pinstripes in 2008.
