"It's Funny..."

Do you find that a lot of people will start telling a story or start talking about something by them saying "It's funny" and go into their story?

Why do people do this? Hardly ever are the stories or the conversation actually funny or even meant to be funny. This has really started to be a pet peeve of mine. I find myself saying it too but can't get myself to quit.

Not really either, it's more like :

"It's funny because my mother came here from Italy blah blah blah". There's nothing funny about it, but people use "it's funny" as a lead to tell pretty much any story.

it could be a subconscious thing....the its funny will make the rest of the sentance beyond, (ex. my mother came here from italy) that much more important...because listener will be expecting some twist or information which makes the first part either funny(weird) or funny (hilarious)

Also, why do they call it a funny bone? It's not funny when you hit it.

Have you noticed how sometimes people will feel a bit off, or something will feel a little wrong, and they say it feels "funny?" wtf, there's nothing funny about it at all. Man, I hate that.
