a much more interesting question would be Omar or Barry Bonds in his prime.

[/ QUOTE ]

No. Barry could almost not even bother to field at all. He'd need to be -100 runs below replacement to be of average value.

[/ QUOTE ]

Haha, I wonder if playing only 8 guys would cost you more than a run per game?

[/ QUOTE ]

where would you put the eight guys, also? would you have just a left-center and right-center fielder? eliminate the third baseman? some combination of the two?

I would probably eliminate 2B and play a shallow right field, and shift the LF and CF towards right a little.
It would depend on the situation of course, and players would be constantly shifting to create double play opportunities, etc.

I think everyone who picks Omar is underrating Pujols' defensive abilities and his work ethic. He would never be good, or even average, but he would suffice.

[/ QUOTE ]

You might be underestimating the number of runs an excellent SS can prevent above what an "average" SS does.

people underrating his work ethic and defensive abilities are probably also not accounting for the fact that playing SS on an every day basis would hurt his offensive numbers, so in that area it should be a wash.

still this should be pujols easily.

also, for those saying 'even if he was as bad as m young/jeter' should realize that he will most likely be much worse than young at SS.

If Pujols were able to play SS as well as Jeter or Young he would have come up as a SS.

I bet Pujols could easily keep his total under 20 lost runs fielding. He's great as a 1B, was fine as a 3B. He's not much bigger than A-Rod so it's not like he's some hulking mass of weight that can't move laterally.
