Yeah I expect Kansas to suck. But it should be cool once I get to Colorado right?

[/ QUOTE ]

The only part more boring/ugly than western Kansas is eastern Colorado.

Eastern Colorado is definitely awful. Like I said, if you're making a marathon drive, time it so that you can pass through Kansas and and eastern Colorado in the middle of the night and pre-dawn morning.

Watching the mountains come into view as day breaks is pretty spectacular, especially if you've never been out there before.

OK so most likely I will take 70 out and 40 back. I won't have much time for stops, I have to work again on tuesday, so I want to get out as fast as possible. Definitely not for casinos. But stuff like Loveland Pass is good. I like mountain roads. I like to drive the blue ridge parkway down to NC and through Deal's Gap going from DC to TN, even though it adds a couple hundred miles to the trip and a lot more hours. Good food stops I may consider too. Don't know when I'm leaving, probably as soon as I finish working tomorrow, which unfortunately looks like it won't be until about midnight. It would be nice to hit the CO/KS border in the morning but I don't have time to plan it that way.

Who knew there was such a large western colorado 2p2 contingent? Yeah Grand Junction is basically an overgrown interstate rest area. Agreed that it's pointless to do the rockies at night. You can't see a damn thing. I also drove through Glenwood canyon not too long ago and the traffic wasn't bad. Of course it may have gotten worse in the last month.

All,

I just drove today from Council Bluffs, IA to Fruita,CO and I have to say that Colorado is amazing. Yes, it is a HARDER drive because of the uphill/downhill drive, but the views are AMAZING!!! This trip is WAY better then the I-40 route.

Their is a bit of construction on the 70, but it didn't take long to get through. I had to stop a couple of times because of the dog and food, but I did 800 miles in about eleven hours and thirty minutes.

I'm a bit partial to CO, since I live in the Denver area, but I've covered this ground via both I-70 and I-40. I-40 isn't the worst thing in the world and it's actually not bad through Northern AZ and NM. However, I-70/15 through the mountains and the decent parts of Utah is so so much better that it's not even a question for me. The only reason not to go I-70 would be if you're travelling in the winter and don't want to get stuck in a blizzard in the mountains. Or maybe if you're pulling something big with a little car that's not supposed to be pulling anything.

Hey if you choose to go I-70 check out Gella's in Hays, Kansas. The food there rocks and we have some awesome beer as well that we brew in the building. 50% of our business is out of towners passing through and I always have people from bigger cities telling me this is some of the best food they have ever eaten. The Oatmeal Stout is award winning.

Anyway, I am a waiter there so maybe I'll see you in.

Farfenugen, I'm from St. John, KS. Gella's is awesome!!!

[censored] all you Kansas haters!!! Of course there are more scenic places, but the rolling fertile plains are beautiful, especially with the sunsets. Western OK/TX panhandle/Eastern NM is where you want to avoid. Just flat barren wasteland.
