Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
i take them seriously. I'm only going to give them a crap review if i really think they're terrible for whatever reason. Otherwise I will give them a reasonable review and put whatever criticism i had in the comments.

Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
If you use the rating system for class selection, then what are you most interested in when selecting a particular section or teacher?

[/ QUOTE ] how easy the class is, ldo. if there was some sort of "quality" rating, i'd probably look at that too. like, if the class was hard but they really thought the teacher was great and felt like they learned a lot, rather than it being hard because the questions were random and unrelated to taught material. but i've never seen one like this before. |

Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
A couple questions:
When are you given the evaluations? How much time are you given to respond? [ QUOTE ] The hardest questions for me to answer are the ones that ask how a professor could present material better. [/ QUOTE ] Is the question "How could the teacher present the material better"? |

Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
So you're pretty much urging that students evaluate much along the same lines as they do with Rate My Professors? If so, do you trust the reliability of that site?

Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
I take the evaluations seriously. Some questions that come to mind are along the lines of:
Was the workload for the course reasonable for the credits earned? (this question should probably have a scale that aims more towards "too much" or "too little") Were the expectations of the class clearly outlined by the syllabus? (it is really annoying when profs don't follow the syllabus) Would you take a class with this prof again? |

Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
I use SacRate.com, myspace.com, and pickaprof.com before enrolling in courses. The main criteria is that the teacher doesn't flunk 50% of the class and isn't boring, since that will lead to missing a lot of class and basically daydreaming during the classes I do attend. I like to be engaged and interested.
I read all the comments on the teacher and I usually get a good feel of him/her. Most people are very honest on the reviews... you see a lot of "Tests are hard, but he's very fair. Gives out study guides, if you do the work- you'll be rewarded. Really learn a lot if you apply yourself." Basically full descriptions of the teacher. You can also weed out the awful reviews since they usually say "X IS A STUTTERING IDIOT THAT FAILS EVERYONE! ONE DAY HE CARRIED A BATTLEAXE IN ONE HAND AND AN EAGLE HEAD IN THE OTHER" (pretty sure that's exactly how one review was) I've loved EVERY class since utilizing all 3 sites. As for the evaluations, I find that they don't mean much. I usually fill in the bubbles and right a sentence on something that can be improved. |

Re: Student Evaluations of Teachers
I filled out an evaluation today after my first test in a class. I've had 3 professors so far, and there were the same 9 questions for each professor. We were supposed to fill them out after our test and barely had any time.
I don't even know what the questions were, i just put 5/5's for them all for the 2 teachers i liked and 3's/4's for the teacher I didn't like. |
