Default Difference between Silver, White Gold, and Platinum?

Hi,

I was looking into getting something, and I searched online, but couldn't find an answer.

So the question is, can you tell the difference between a silver, white gold, and platinum chain?

Because the cost difference between them is a lot, and it'd be kind of dumb to get a platinum chain if it looked exactly like a silver one ('cause you're obviously never going to tell anyone it's platinum)

Silver tarnishes. Gold doesn't. Platinum would be better used as a catalyst.

Platinum is heavy... The weight is pretty significant too, especially when you can easily notice the difference in something as small as wedding bands.

[/ QUOTE ]Silver sitting around in a china cabinet tarnishes, but when worn as jewelry, it doesn't really. I've been wearing a silver ring for years that has never tarnished or left a mark on the skin. I think it has to do with your skin oils, frequent showers, handwashing, etc. that constantly keep removing any bit of tarnish before it really starts up.

It does get scratched fairly easily however.

Platinum doesn't scratch as easily.

both of my rings are platinum. it doesn't scratch much (although I did put a gouge in it by brushing into a metal post) but it loses its shine fairly quickly. Prepare to have it shined up every year or so. Honestly I'm not sure how that compares to WG or silver, so this may not be that helpful. I do know it's expensive as all hell. But we got it for my engagement ring, so I felt compelled to get it for the wedding ring. My husband's was titanium and it was like $100.

Titanium is the new precious metal. Though, i probably wouldnt use it as a wedding band.

If you have platinum jewelry I guarantee you will be telling folks that it is platinum. I'd think ppl buy it just so they can say it's platinum.
