I've been playing for a few days now and I'm enjoying the game. I've bought myself a Merlin as my combat ship, a Bantam to mine, and a Badger to assist with the mining. I figure it's about time for me to join a corp but I'm clueless as to which one I should join.

Also, I haven't done much traveling and I'm using the first station I was docked at as my home. The area has plenty of scordite to mine and it's a secure area. Should I be looking into another base as my home station? Besides mining and doing L1 mission is there any other tasks I should focus on?

train up propulsion jamming and high speed maneuvering (both well worth it!) and you can be a frigate tackler in pvp

I've been playing for a couple months now (3.6M SP), still in the newbie corp, still doing PvE in hi-sec space, and I've sort of lost direction. I don't know what to aim for anymore, nor why. No one ever tells you which ship to fly for what purpose. You just sort of have to buy a ship, try it for awhile, and hope not to be disappointed.

I had to leave town for 3 weeks, so I found a skill path that had a 28-day skill I could learn while away. This put me on the path towards flying Zealot T2 cruiser, which seemed to make sense at the time since at the time I was flying an Omen cruiser, and T2 must be "better". Only problem is, I'm not sure I want to fly that ship. I don't know what ship makes sense for me. I got sick and tired of farming standing, stuck in lvl 2s currently, so I started doing complexes, and those were more enjoyable. I could solo a lvl 3 complex in my Omen, no problem.

But now I'm trying out a Harbringer battlecruiser, and I'm rather fond of that ship because its numerous hi-slots let me use a tractor beam and salvager, just like my Coercer destroyer had. It's so freeing to have that many slots. I'd feel pretty silly skilling 2/3rds of the way toward Zealot and not flying it though. I haven't figured out why anyone would want to fly a cruiser when they can fly a battlecruiser; it's got more of everything.

I guess the next step for me would be to try and find more challenging PvE content, but being unguilded leaves me hamstrung in my options. I don't want to poke into 0.4 to hit a level 5 complex and get podded again (especially now that I have 5 implants). But all the good ISK is in ratting 0.0 space, isn't it?

well, PvE is pretty straightforward, get a decent frigate for level 1s, get a decent cruiser for level 2s, get a decent battlecruiser (or skip these for battleships) for level 3s, then get a decent battleship for level 4s (almost always either a dominix or a raven, but these are by no means the only BS worthwhile in pve). Right now all you can really do is max out your battleship and start accumulating faction gear to kit yourself out in, but soon there will be level 5-8 that will allow you to move on to carrier/dreadnaught ships (about 18-24 months of training, though a lot of the pre-reqs help non-capital ships too).

Level 4s are just as good money if not more than ratting in 0.0 -- really, the best money in 0.0 ratting is through faction spawns, which you can certainly get a hold of by doing level 4 deadspace complexes.

It's really rare to get podded in lowsec, since the security hit is so great.

as far as your zealot training, you can use Amarr Cruiser V to fly a Curse or a Pilgrim, which are pretty awesome Recon ships and they don't even need tech 2 guns (or any guns at all...) to be very powerful. these are mostly useful in PvP though.

Oh, and Heavy Assault Ships and Cruiser V is a pre-requisite for Command ships like the Damnation and Absolution, which are pretty kick-ass, useful in both PvE and PvP.

Any tips on maxing isk,fp/hour mission running? Obviously as I've progressed I had been looking for higher quality agents in lower sec systems (>=.5) -- I manged to find a lvl 1 agent (federation navy, security) that would issue 200k+ ISK missions usually in system, occasionally 1 hop away in a high sec zone. My standing with the agent was ~4 when I tried refusing every mission under 150k. Did this for a few hours and did well, but eventually my standing pegged at around 2.1 and wouldn't go any lower. When it hit the low it seemed that the good missions were appearing at a reduced frequency but after say 10 tries I would still be able to run a 150k or better.

This was, at least for a time, very profitable. I was still getting storyline missions and of course my federation navy standing was increasing rapidly as well. Is it worth doing this in the short term on occasion or is it ultimately best to simply grind forward and eventually the quality of the missions and ISK rewards will make it worth it?

I have approximately the same amount of skill points as you, dubois, and I also feel a little lost.

I trained up fast to a battlecruiser, got a Drake and started running level 3 missions and I've been doing that since.

I then started training for an assault frigate (a Harpy) which meant training a lot of support and gunnery skills as well. It is much more fun to fly the Harpy than the Drake because you need to get in closer and you need to manage your cap much more than on the Drake.

I started on the Harpy because I wanted a semi-decent, cheapish pvp ship I could use if I decided to move into low/no-security space. But I don't know if I'll ever do that. I think I'm a carebear at heart

So now I run level 3 missions in the Harpy. Yesterday I did Pirate Invasion (which is the only level 3 mission I've lost a Drake on). It was hard, but I made it through. It's fun to be in a frigate sized ship and have 10-12 cruisers and battlecruisers on your tail. And kind of fun having heavy missiles do 7.9 damage against you.

Right now I'm training salvaging. I figured that it's about time I got that. That lead to training destroyers to get a good loot ship. And I'll probably train Minmatar Frigates a bit to get a Thrasher which Vilon (EVE name) recommends as the best loot ship.

So there's still stuff to do. I'm also considering training for mining barges. And maybe work on some industry skills... And I need to max out my learning skills as well (boring!).
Oh, and my drone skills need work too. And maybe train for a Raven and try my hand at level 4 missions.

Sometimes I also sit and stare at the map for an hour, trying to find a nice quiet spot in low-sec and thinking about moving. I recently trained for jump clones so now I can go out and have a look without risking my implants.

I really have a hard time staying focused... Maybe I should get an alt like some of the others have so I can train two skills at the same time.

Honestly, I think that's the best thing about Eve. You can put in little to no time each week, or if you need a few months of you can set a LOOOOOOONG skill to train and deactivate your account until you return, etc and still have lots of fun during the time you ARE on.

I played the trial about 2 months ago and set a long skill like learning to level 5 to train while I was gone. Does this mean that it will be trained when I am back? I thought that skills don't continue to train if you disable your account or begin training on an alternate character.

Anyhow, finding this thread reminded me how much fun EVE is. My first attempt into play poker for real $ isn't going so hot, so maybe this will be a good diversion. I actually need a new video card because the in game text is garbled. I can read well enough to get by or copy paste some things if it is really important, but the worst thing is chat so I can't really enjoy a corp. I can afford a new video card but I am kind of delaying since DX10 ones are just coming to market.

I went Minamatar > Sibiestor I think. My attributes are best for Science/Trade and I started off with points in mining (which I don't really enjoy). At the end of my trial I was running 2 salvagers, a missle launcher and 3 artillery on the Minmatar battleship. I love salvaging as an extra way to earn some cash. As long as you can micro the targeting, it doesn't add much time to ratting but it does add nice stuff to sell. Always check the regional market for this stuff because you can sometimes earn 10000%+ profit by saving up X item and traveling to a specific station to sell. I would recommend training salvaging up to at least level 4 if you are going to do it. I once came across a nice wreck (T2 battlecruiser or some crap) while warping through a zone but couldn't salvage it because my level was too low.

One final tip for newbies who start Minmatar (This may work for other races but YMMV and risk is involved): As soon as you have been out into the world some and can afford a better frigate buy the fastest one (I think its called a Reaper) and throw an afterburner on it. Now, remember the very first DED zones near your home base that was part of the tutorial? There are about 6 spots in the same system and they constantly respawn low level rats. Jump in between these to find wrecks to loot (Yellow or grey solid triangles).

Be warned looting a yellow wreck sets off the aggression level and the rightful owner can kill you. There is usually one or two guys in a zone just afk killing wrecks with their drones. It is usually quite safe to just loot this crap, especially if nobody is in the zone and some things sell for some decent cash. You might get caught if the guy isn't afk at that moment, so be prepared to run. With little or no training you can equip a ship scanner (common junk drop) to check out what the guy you are about to rob has on. As long as you don't mess with anyone who has warp disruptors or webifiers, you can safely outrun these guys. There are some better frigates for general use, but you will definitely get a good return on your investment and have a nice way to save up for what you really want.

I believe skills started from a trial period do not continue training when an account is inactive. But skills from a paid account do.
