Are charts really helpful? I make my decisions on starting hands based on stack sizes, likely opponents, position, how aggressive the players are, how well they play postflop, etc. There is no chart I know of that can guide you when you consider all the factors you must consider when playing a hand.

Well, of course all the things you said are true.
But no matter what the opponent's stack size is - you are not going to play J4o UTG.

You might for Metagame reasons ... say you just suffered a bad beat and want to give the impression that you are tilting

[/ QUOTE ]

If you're raising J4o, you are tilting.

Isura ... I think that you and Grunch (see here) can get a deal on sarcasm detectors if you pool your money and approach the vendor correctly.

OP : of course J4o is a fold. KTo is most of the time a fold, but if you seem to be running over a table and getting no resistance preflop then fire with it, hope it gets shown down (without losing much) and then tighten up a bit. Suited connectors can be opened for raises in the right spots as well.

NL is too fluid to have an accurate chart as stated above.

starting hand charts suck

[/ QUOTE ]

Particulary for good players hoping to take advantage of new and weak players who otherwise would be playing total crap.

I think we all understand that many styles of play work in NL. When people ask for hand charts (I'd be interested myself), it's not necessarily because we're looking to follow a strict guideline. Poker is a situational game, but there's still certain plays that are terrible, no matter how you look at it. For example, J4o UTG. But that one's obvious. KTo is more borderline. What about 54s? My point is that it's nice to have a guideline. I don't want to experiment raising T8s UTG 10,000x so I can have the stats to know that I'm losing with it.

but those borderline hands are so situational that a chart is useless.

Charts can have 'situations' appended to them. I'm thinking of Hilgers in his ITH book for example.

There's one in Sklansky/Miller's new book.

I've made an Excel sheet of it, but I'm only giving it out to those people who've bought the book (don't want to violate any copyrights).

E-mail me at mahikoa@gmail.com, tell me the 1st and 3rd words on page 99, and I'll send it back.

IMO if you are new to NL you should use a hand chart. You should look to dump it once you begin to understand the game but a hand chart can help keep you from losing your bankroll the first time you play. I started with Phil Gordon Little Green Book and used his hand chart. I think it’s a good place to start.
