ISP disconnect bs during tourny...hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllp!!!

How can one come up with a computer setup that will minimize the threat of disconnects while playing online?
My ISP is CableOne and their system is all new fiber optic. My computer is a Dell P4 and modem is a Motorola just like CableOne rents to its' victims.
When I call support, they just have me unplug the cables on the modem and plug them back in. They are now having their engineering department look into my problems, but this is all probably bs.
I am currently trying to make the transition from limit to no limit, so disconnects are no longer as amusing as they used to be.
What combination of modems, computers, ISPs, fairy dust or whatever can best protect me from disconnects. Also, is there anyway to tell, like pings or whatever, if the problems are with the cable company or with my computer stuff? Thanks in advance.

= excellent level of redundancy.


if you lose a $200 pot every few months, you would be obviously better off spending a little upfront and a recurring fee to massively reduce this cost.

residential ISPs usually dont promise any level of service.

what josem said is good idea and is cheap.

if you dont want downtime between switching links,
both links need to broadcast the same ip. you'd need 2 business connections. multihoming isnt cheap

I am a newb on this. How do you set it up so they have the same IP? I have cable internet and play most of the time on my laptop via a wireless network. I also have a verizon wireless card but just started looking into a backup connection for poker. Most people seem to recommend DSL. Do I just get the DSL as a backup and then somehow get it to have the same IP? Once setup, how much downtime will there be on the site when it is switching over? How about if the IP addresses are different?

Can you access the cable modem and run pings from it? I'd say if you could ping your PC from the cable modem but can't ping the head end equipment than it is definitely their problem. You could also run extended ping tests (go to a command prompt, type ping -t www.yahoo.com, hit CTRL+C after 15 minutes or so (the longer the better), and see if there is any heavy packet loss)...that might help them.

If you still have a land line, you could get an analog modem and pay for a cheap dialup connection. I used to have problems with my DSL and when I would get disconnected, I'd fire up the analog connection and keep playing.

The biggest thing is that I don't know how poker sites deal with IP changes.
