Thus, hindering my progress and making me feel very uncomfortable. I ended up just ignoring her, but there must have been a better way.

You don't understand the idea of a wingman, do you? if he's acting as your wingman, he's obliged to take the hit with the beast if it means you get a clear shot at the beauty. the downside, of course, is when he spots the hottie and you're automatically put into wingman mode. then, you have to take a deep breath, wrap it up and do your duty.
