he hits better as a 1st baseman.

WTF does this even mean?

[/ QUOTE ]

It is strange but he hits statistically better as a 1Bman than a DH. He says he focuses better when he plays the field. I'm not sure how many ABs he has at DH. It might just be sample size and Giambi being results oriented.

Allthough, on a personal note, I used to play 1B the majority of the time in high school and a few times I DH'd and I'd have to admit, it's harder to stay focused just sitting there for an hour between ABs.

He has to hit better at one or the other. Doesn't mean it is statistically significant or can be used to predict going forward. Plus, he is injury prone and this will reduce his chance of getting hurt.

It's not strange at all. He plays 1B when healthy, when he's not very healthy, but healthy enough to hit, he played DH.

Basically, he hits better when healthy.

This isn't rocket science.

the yankees don't rely on their 1B for power production. they have plenty of power in many other positions. besides, phelps will be platooning first.

as for giambi hitting better, sure he has work to stay focused on the game as a DH. but watch him play 1B 3 times a week, and he'll miss august and sptember with a bum knee.

[/ QUOTE ]

I can see this - but it's close. The Yankees will still have a big hole in their lineup with Mientkewicz - I wouldn't be surprised to see Doug waived by July, he stinks. Having a guy who hits almost as bad as Kelly Stinnett taking regular ABs - not a fan.

Thayer, I don't know if it's enough to be statistically significant, but Giambi has hit significantly lower as a DH than as a 1B. I suppose the test will be this year. Normally, I would disregard this sort of thing but I think it's over a fairly large AB sample.

Doug Mientkewicz is a career .360 OBP guy with a .369 OBP last year. Johnny Damon's career OBP is .353. He's not that bad for a 9 hitter.

Well - this is vague, but Rubeskies, there are HOF CFs with worse OBP than that (okay, maybe not) - Thayer's point is, you can find any schmuck 1B to hit .382 SLG - Mientkiewicz's projection for this season. You can't find center fielders who do what Damon does just lying around. Doug also hasn't had the best showing so far in spring training.

Yeah, I agree. I'm just as surprised as anyone that Doug is the Yankees opening day 1Bman. Personally I'd rather them throw this Juan Miranda kid into the mix and see what he's got. But I don't think Doug's AS bad as everyone is making his out to be.
