From the first google hit to olympic rugby.

1924 Paris
Three teams entered - France, USA and Romania. Each country played two games. Both France and USA beat Romania, who were awarded the bronze medal. France won 59-3, scoring 13 tries including four by the fine Stade Francais winger Adolphe Jaureguy. The USA then defeated Romania 39-0. The final was played at Colombes stadium, Paris on 18 May 1924 and the USA took the gold with a 17-3 victory before 30,000. The Americans, from Stanford University, scored five tries, (Farrish(2), Patrick, Rogers and Manelli), with a conversion by Doe. Gallau scored the lone French try. The match finished in uproar, when Gideon Nelson, one of the reserves, was flattened by a walking stick. The American anthem was jeered, and rugby ceased at the Olympics.

Doesn't seem too comparable...

I think someone gave me a rugby shirt for Christmas many years ago. I know I had one, but it was too small, so I didn't buy it myself. Very, very likely it was a gift.

Um.....you guys in this debate might want to read the story of the 1924 US Rugby team that won a gold medal at the Olympics.

[ QUOTE ]

The USA Olympic rugby team arrived in Paris on April 27, 1924. In the six months since the FOC's invitation, a squad of 22 superb athletes - including a slew of California football and basketball All-Americans -had been recruited and trained in San Francisco. Most of the players had never before played rugby, but coach Charlie Austin was relying on his team's size, speed, stamina, and raw athletic ability to compensate for its technical deficiencies.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was the second consecutive US gold medal in Rugby (the most by any country) until Rugby was removed from the Olympics.

A group of football and basketball players who had never played the sport trained for 6 months and won the gold medal at the Olympics.

So...um....it isn't as "hypothetical" as you think.

you dont actually believe that something that happened 80 yrs ago is relevant at all to today.

oh some other facts that our friend redbean conveniently left out.

3 teams entered.

from here: http://www.rugbyfootballhistory.com/olympics.htm

"Nevertheless, seven players of the 1920 team together with a host of large American football players"

so it wasnt all football players.

its really dumb to draw any conclusions from something that happend 80 yrs ago when american football was completely different today and its probable the olympics did not display the best rugby talent.

from the same link it says the americans were "headed for England to prepare where they were beaten four times in practice sessions."

tbf it doesnt specify how many they played and if they won any but its fair to presume that the best rugby teams and players were not represented in the olympics. fwiw the usa arrived in england apr 27 and the games started may 4 so how many scrimmages could they have played?

shocking that redbean intentionally leaves out easily available facts detrimental to his argument.

Yeah, I know...to be honest I actually think the rugby guys would kill them...but I think its funny to see the pro-rugby guys get all riled up. I also find it completely LOL to see how so many Americans think that our country is the only one capable of producing world class athletes.

I think a lot of it has to do with appearance. For example, if you watched Lebron and Dwight Howard and company in layup drills doing all those crazy dunks, you would swear that they'd kill all of the other countries in basketball. Yet these seemingly "poor athletes" have beaten Team USA the past few years.

Firstly, 3 teams entered one of whom is just not a rugby playing nation. So USA actually had exactly one real competitor. I even have no idea how seriously rugby. Guessing by this;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Nat...3.E2.80.931909

I would suggest very, very unseriously.

So, 83 years ago, the USA managed to win one game of rugby over a country that was bad at rugby.

Meaningful.

Don't worry, USA will once again dominate basketball at the next Olympics.

I realize to a lot of you this is a very touchy subject because rugby is your sport. Sure, I like football, but I'm not telling you, "good luck if you ever move to the states, blah blah." The fact that you even think like that tells me you aren't able to give an unbiased opinion.

[/ QUOTE ]

er heh you realise most of the people arguing against you watch the nfl every week, right?
