Default fold a set short handed???????

1/2 NL (6-max)

two players just sat out on the previous hand so the game is three handed.

button: ($185) 22/13 typical tag stats
small blind: ($350) 50/8 1AF loose passive player
big blind: ($385) HERO

HERO dealt: 7c 7s
preflop: button min raises to $4, sb calls, HERO calls
flop: 7d 6c 5d

sb bets $8, HERO raises to $28 (my thought here was that the preflop min raise by the button meant he was very strong or very weak so if he was strong w QQ+ type hands he'd be willing to put in quite a bit here and if weak he'd be folding anyway so i thought i'd try and get him to commit to a big hand -- so this is why i didn't just call and see what the turn brought (is this bad?); and i figured that the small blind was on a draw of some sort but he is pretty passive as mentioned.)

anyway button folds and small blind goes all in for $338 more.

HERO does what?

also let's say for arguements sake HERO has 66 or 55 instead of top set what does he do then?

3-bet preflop and note whether or not he folds. This way you know if he's giving you free money any time he minraises from the button/CO.

Call with top set. He could have 66 or 55 or some flushy combo. He might even have 2-pair.

It's probably a fold with 55 against a LP player. 66 could go either way but I wouldn't feel bad about calling.

I'd instacall any set here.

when i did it i called the 77 instantly but was concerned i should have thought about it a little more. upon further thought i think the top set is an easy call, but with middle and bottom set it is a little more murky. i think he was passive enough i would have folded 55. but the 66 would be a real toss up imo. i'm pretty sure i would have thought forever on middle set and called.

well my thoughts were (given that he seemed pretty passive) he could have 66 or 55 or 98 or 43 or two big diamonds. i didn't think he'd play two big diamonds that way given how passive he is so i discounted that quite a bit. so i think a 55 (ie bottom set) would be a difficult call as we are about a 2:1 dog to a straight and a big dog to the other sets. most players would play combo draws this way too i think so i don't know if this is enough to make 55 a clear fold or call but both plays merit some considersation.

Call with any set. Too many big draws out there.
