Default Will A-Rod sign an extension?

Frrom espn :

"The Yankees, who are all but assured of making the playoffs for the 13th straight season, likely won't watch A-Rod walk without attempting to sign him to an extension. But they have to act rather quickly. The Rangers are paying $29 million of Rodriguez's remaining deal. The moment he opts for free agency, the Yankees lose that money. They keep it if they can sign A-Rod to an extension."

Since the Rangers are picking up almost $10 million a season, is there any reason to think that Yanks won't offer him something like $35-$40 million/year before he can get to free agency? The predictions are all talking $30 million, but I think the Cubbies and Red Sox and maybe the Angels will drive the bidding higher. Seems like the Yanks would be dumb to not try to overwhelm him with a take-it-or-leave-it offer before he hits the market.

Unless I'm mistaken, we've had 8234823 threads about his free agency. This is something different.

You are mistaken. Cashman has stated that if the Yankees can't resign him they can't afford to sign him. This has been discussed many times.

I'm about 95% convinced Arod will opt out
So it is more of a question about whether Cashman will stick to his guns.
