Taking a bet back?

I've never seen this and am wondering if this is not an uncommon practice:
Sitting at a 10-20 table at Soaring Eagle Casino in MI. The pot was 4-handed with a preflop raise. I've got KK and the flop came up ATT. I bet, fold, raise (10 seat) 1 seat throws out $10, dealer said "it's $20, raise" 1 seat says, "oh, never mind" and takes his money back [img]/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]
I make a comment that I've never seen anybody be allowed to take a bet back before and the 2 seat says "there wasn't any action behind it yet."
I ended up spiking my K on the turn and won the pot.
I didn't make a huge issue because I didn't want to upset the table, but every other place I've played once a bet hits the felt it's live.
Am I wrong in this, or is this not completely uncommon?

On another note, I saw quite a few misdeals, reading the board wrong, and other sloppy procedures. Playing Caribean Stud (don't laugh it was 2:30 am and the poker room was closed) dealer dealt himself 6 cards.

It is standard that a player that is unaware of a raise receieves his bet back and is now permitted to act on his hand. So what happened there is what is suppsoed to happen.

It is common that a player is allowed to take back there money in this situation where there is no action behind them.

I can't see any reason to not allow this, unless the player appears to be shooting an angle (throws out the money looks around for reactions before correcting the error) but you can usually tell that the player was unaware of the raise.

I play at Soaring Eagle regularly, and I have seen what you described quite frequentl. Often it is an older gentleman, who either didn't here the action announced or was honestly total unaware, usually not anyone trying to shoot an angle.

And as I understand that is pretty much standard procedure in most cardrooms regarding that situation.

What weeknight were you there playing at? I might have been at your table for a while.

In lower limit games in Vegas, it has been my experience that as long as the dealer speaks / puts his hand up / calls time / etc before the next person acts it is perfectly legal to pull back the bet.
If the dealer doesn't notice and someone acts most of the time they make it stand, however in real beginner games I've seen them break this practice.

Played Thursday night between 12 and 1:30, table was great until they shut down the room. Also played Fri. from about 1-4 on the 10-20 then went to the 3-6 Omaha table -- WHAT A GREAT GAME!!
It was an older guy who complained on my first pot when I was open ended and had a flush draw, yet he drew more times than I can count to 1 card flushes [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Normally I wouldn've cared, but this guy was a nit and kept sucking out. Was hoping to get some of my money back from him.

Ahh yea, I hadn't been up since wednesday. My buddies were playing in the tournament on friday though and I know one of them played a little 10/20 that night, the others play NL.

I was there Monday-Wednesday though, no 10/20 on Mon or Wednesday got going, just 6/12 (games were decent, Wednesday had a really good 6/12 on table 18. Monday my table wasn't so great as usual haha, but on Tuesday when we got 10/20 going it was a pretty good game.)

I was pretty surprised last week at Pechanga when the dealer would not let a geezer take his $3 bet back. His options were to fold & leave the bet in or call the raise. In the interest of completing a boring anecdote, he folded.
