Overlay?

sorry to post a possibly really stupid question, but what is overlay?

I have known it to represent the money that a poker site adds to the prize pool. But I have been reading posts, and BarryL has been saying things like "given the overlay" when responding to certain hands, and I have been really confused.

the other use is correct, and most often happens when a guarantee isn't met
