I'd give a * for Rio Bravo (directed by Howard Hawks) and Big Jake.

[/ QUOTE ]

Agreed regarding Big Jake. Quality-wise, maybe not, but for entertainment value, it has some of the best John Wayne lines.

Red River is good choice. It's not Wayne's typical character and Montgomery Clift is very good here as well.

Myrtle's list is really good, but I'd add a star next to McLintock! and Big Jake, 2 stars next to Rio Bravo and take the star away from True Grit.

Universally regarded as the worst John Wayne film of all time:

The Conqueror

McLintock! is one of my personal favorites, as it shows Wayne in what might be one of his more humorous roles (along with Donovans Reef).

I didn't star it because not many hold it in as high regard as I do, but I probably should have.

I like Jake and Rio Bravo, but don't think they rate with the others that I've given 2 **'s to.

As far as True Grit.....Hell, it deserves a star just for the last 20 minutes of the film, starting with the showdown in the mountain valley between Rooster and Ned Peppers bunch. For the two or three seconds that they hold the long distance shot, it rates right up there with one of the finest 'atmosphere' shots I've evern seen in any movie.

[/ QUOTE ]It's funny but some of the most anti-American leftists among the French New Wave directors were enchanted by American mainstream movies, notably some westerns -- and John Wayne films most of all. Godard called John Wayne various names for his pro-Vietnam War stance but he waxed admiringly about The Searchers. He was fond of the scene where John Wayne sweeps off her feet Natalie Wood, once a settler little girl and now, after being taken in by the Indians, a bona fide Indian herself, and takes up on his horse to ride off towards her old home, in one single move. He considered it one of the most sublime moments in cinema.

The 3 Godfathers is also a favourite of mine, but it's not a masterpiece. A nice, small movie where Wayne and the other 2 main actors have a great chemistry.

I've always considered Rio Bravo to be one of his most entertaining films. Walter Brennan is excellent (hilarious) in it and Howard Hawks of coarse did a great job directing it.

I know what you mean about McLintock...

I think I'm biased against True Grit because I really didn't like the Mattie character at all. It is kinda funny watching Robert Duvall in that one as Ned though (not to mention Glen Campbell).

You bring up what I consideer a very valid point about many of his post late 50's movies......In many cases the supporting cast leaves much to be desired.

I haven't got the time right this second, but.....

Rickey Nelson?

Dean Martin?

and some of the women supporting characters are so miscast that they are laughable.....You named one.

.....again, another excellent non-typical John Wayne movie. An actual character study of three bad guys who undergo a moral transformation when faced with the dilemnna of what to do with an orphaned infant.

Goodl stuff.........
