Default Re: Phil Ivey vs. Jman 300/600

I think there are moments when I have actually played better when stuck. Often when I am deep into a hu match and I am up a lot, I can get complacent. When I am stuck I really feel the pressure, and I always play a ton better under pressure.

Still, I obviously sometimes tilt too, and in such cases i try to stop myself.

I'd be interested to see what Phil G's take is on this discussion/phenomenon.

[/ QUOTE ]

Jman (Phil G.?):
[ QUOTE ]
Stop loss strategy's are only good if you play worse when losing. There's no other benefit to them EV-wise.

[/ QUOTE ]

gg:
[ QUOTE ]
Aren't they also good if your opponents play better when you are losing?

[/ QUOTE ]

Edit:
Jman:
[ QUOTE ]
I do however, think it's mostly a matter of whether you play worse (or your opponent plays better).

I do think stop losses are very important against great players because I think almost everyone plays worse stuck and better when winning, whether they know it or not.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for clarification.

Jman28,

This is great stuff. I really miss you att CR. Could you please tell us what you think about TC's and DLizzles posts?
I really enjoy your writing and as a HU player I think they were pretty much spot on regarding the dynamics of starting of HU being stuck a couple of buyins. Do you really think this can be overcome?

Tack!

Jman, would you mind going into more detail on just exactly Ivey's leaks are against strong players?

[/ QUOTE ]

I would rather not. I don't think he reads 2+2, but if he does and I don't know it, that would be super -ev for me.

Here's every hand that I won or lost >$10k in (I'm gonna x-post this on my blog and try to answer questions there too):

Phil, thanks for doing this.

I'd be interested in hearing your thought processes behind the two big call downs. Is that the type of situation where you realise that game theory wise you need to be calling x% of the time, and try to randomise it, or were there specific reasons why you chose this hand/board rather than the bunch of times in the session when you folded in similar circumstances.

Judging by your past posts, which seem to consist largely of one-line post equivalents of grunts, you're not exactly Einstein yourself. And if you want to compare graduate degrees, I'd be more than happy to do so, sport.

I'm having fun imagining you typing this.

jman, thx for posting all of those. good stuff. care to give thoughts on your river check when you had A7 on AQ233r board? seems like you need to bet this since you will often have air here and sometimes have AK or better, both of which i would think you are betting most of the time?

i guess stack sizes were a little awkward since it would have put you in a nasty spot if you bet small and he CRs and you were deep to just shove yourself?

You're welcome. I heart 2+2.

The calldowns were not based on game theory randomization. I don't want to talk about reads on Ivey, but he basically doesn't balance his range well in certain situations, as is evident by what he had when I called down with 87.

I don't think he can call with worse very often. I shouldn't be bluffing that river much as any ace has to call since it chops usually. I had a very strong feeling based on some things (sorry to be vague) that a hand like 43s/53s was a decent chunk of his range. I wasn't too far off, as he had the pair+gutter.

Going out with friends. I'll try to get back to you guys tomorrow.
