Default Opinions on Saabs.....

Thinking about gettting a used Saab - I'm kinda floored that one can get a used Saab 93 (either Linear or step up model) for roughly the same price as a used Jetta or Civic!! I'm not kidding. What am I missing here. My bud who is bigtim into cars seems to think they just don't hold their value but are good cars. Looking in the 16k or less used car range.

opinions??

sorry for putting it here, but I think the car forum is no longer.

I had a 9-5 Linear sedan for 3 years on a lease that ended two years ago. It was a pretty nice car. No problems, decent gas mileage and good power. I would have leased another one after my lease was up but we shuffled cars when the second kid came along and I took over the wife's SUV. I got a really good lease deal on the car (like $350 a month with nothing down and no security deposit) considering the sticker price.

I did notice when the lease was up that the private party sale values on KBB.com were a bit below the lease buyout, but not substantially. Since my payments were so low on the lease, I didnt care that much.

From my experience the older ones are better than the newer ones. I can't tell you exactly where that line is, but my gf's dad owns a 2003 and absolutely hates it. Nothing but problems. I would do some research first on the year you are buying.

Pretty much the opposite of what industry quality reports suggest.

Saabs are pretty fun to drive, but expect higher than average maintenance costs and not-so-great reliability. Audi is a lot like this as well - drops in value pretty quickly, so it's tempting to look at like A4's, but they require a lot of work.
