Major Error trying to install Ubuntu
I thought that everything went smoothly on my installation of Ubuntu 7.0.4 on an old Dell Dimension 4400 (1.67 Ghz, 640 MB RAM), including the partitioning.
However, upon reboot, Grub (the program that asks you which operating system you want to start in) gives me "Error 21" before any options and does not go any farther than that black screen. Error 21 means "disk not recognized." What can I do to fix this? The only way I can get anywhere close to the machine is by running Ubuntu off the live CD which is a bit handicapped. Any ideas?? |

Re: Major Error trying to install Ubuntu
how many drives do you have in the system?
What kind of drives are they? Do they use an external controller? You should be able to use a linux rescue disk to fix it, but I don't know how. Have you posted this/searched for this over at the ubuntu forums? |

[/ QUOTE ] It is possible to use the install cd as a rescue disk but this is non trivial (despite the fact I've had to do it a number of times now to reinstall lilo). Unfortunately I have no experience with grub :-( |
