Default KEM? COPAG? MODIANO?

Hi there,

I am thinking about which cards to buy. Currently we are playing with Copags (pokersize, poker index). We also purchased a deck of jumbo index copags, because I think they look cool. Playing with the jumbo index I noticed that it is actually a little bit uncomfortable since you have to lift the cards more in order to see both the rank AND the suit. The poker indeces are easier to spot when you lift the edges of your hole cards. Now, I was kinda shocked by this fact because I always thought the jumbo index was a must-have. But now I really think the normal-sized index does a better job (when your eyes are still fully functional), because you do not have to lift the edges that high up and bend the cards that much.
I mean, if you look at jumbos on the flop they still look great, but they fail as pocket cards, I think.

Any thoughts on this?

Now, does anyone have experience in playing with Modianos (poker index, 4-coloured). I've read on homepokertourney.com that Modianos feel a lot thicker than KEMs and Copags. A fact that I would appreciate since I am never quite sure whether I really like the thin KEMs and Copags, although they are considered to be the best and shuffle really well.

Now, my question: KEMs? Copags? Modianos?
KEMs: Because they are known to be the best and most durable?

Copags: Because you get the best for your money?

Modianos: Because they provide a 4-colour deck with poker index and NOT 4 indeces? (The other card factories do provide 4-colour decks but only with 4 indeces and that sucks, I think.)

Jumbo Index: Because it looks cool on the board and you know em from TV?

Poker Index: Because it is more handy when looking at your hole cards?

4-colour: Because I use 4-colour online and it would be cool and helpful to have em at home, too.

Problem is, I am too stingy to just buy all of them.

4 corner indicies cover left and right-handed people.

That's why I was a big fan of the Magnum style that the old Kem cards had- small corner indicies, big pips in the middle to be seen by all.

As for cost- get your group to chip in for a one-time purchase, buy all three types... and they can choose which they prefer. Then, give the other decks away as a prize (first tourney bustouts, perhaps?)

I ordered the Copag 4-color and we play with poker size Kems right now.

I heard somewhere that bridge sized is best, can anyone confirm/deny?

You do not want bridge sized cards, I play with the jumbo 4color copags, and also the regular ones. I've also had KEMS (lost one card though), but for almost twice the price of copags I didn't notice a huge difference.

Never played with modiano's though.

I've read that KEMs have a tendency to bend. Well, the Copags that we play with are bent, too. So, mabye that point goes to Modiano, because they are much thicker and therefore not that easily deformed. Never used Mediano, as mentioned.

P.S. I'm from Germany, so, over here there's only a limited arsenal of poker supply which also limits your choices of cards. BUT they're gaining at it because the poker boom is out (t)here.

I bought some Dal Negro 4 PIPs that I am pretty pleased with.

Mostly that was a decision based off some research, but partly I found a ridic deal.

Strongly disagree- unless you are very large (hands), bridge size are easier to hold and shuffle and deal.

I have had consistent bowing/bending issues with Kems and Modianos...I have not had bowing/bending issues with Copags, Dal Negros, Fourniers, NTPs or Desjgns.

Well, our Copags do have bowing/bending issues, as all pastic cards potentially do, I suppose. Telling from what I know about our Copags and from what I read about KEMs, there are bowing and bending issues with all kinds of plastic cards. It seems to be a matter of luck whether you get a bend/bowed one or whether your deck will loose shape when used (appears depend on storage, moisture and heat etc.), or whether your deck will last and keep it's perfect shape for long time to come.
Still, KEMs and Copags have the best image of all. I personally think I'll try KEMs next (but with regular index).
