I nominate The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien. It's a semi-fictionalized account of Vietnam experiences punctuated by occasional lessons on the craft of being a writer. It is on my short list of life-changing books. [/ QUOTE ] I've read this and I second your nomination. I would love to discuss it. |

[/ QUOTE ] Even if it doesn't get voted as the book to be read, still read it anyways. It is amazing and will make you laugh your ass off. Pulitzer prize winner for the year 1980 I believe. As for everyone else... really good suggestions. I think Ill let this thread run one more day to both get more suggestions and to let more people learn about the book club that may not have seen it yet. Ill try to get a poll together tomorrow night to vote on the book. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I had been planning on it too, but today I got two job offers and feel on top of the world, so I am doing a bunch of stuff I would normally be too lazy to do. |

Re: OOT Book club, first book suggestions
[ QUOTE ]
The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century, Thomas Friedman Friedman made his name as the NY Times Special Op-Ed columnist covering the most recent Iraq War. He has a strong foreign policy, though not sure of economic, background. From his website: Thomas Friedman demystifies the brave new world for readers, allowing them to make sense of the often bewildering global scene unfolding before their eyes. With his inimitable ability to translate complex foreign policy and economic issues, Friedman explains how the flattening of the world happened at the dawn of the twenty-first century; what it means to countries, companies, communities, and individuals; and how governments and societies can, and must, adapt. -Al [/ QUOTE ] I'm gonna give a thumbs down on this book. I tried to read but it's simply not very good. Friedman is a journalist and, well, he's not particularly bright. He doesn't have the tools to filter through a mass of observations and distill them into a meaningful or cohesive insight on how the world works. You get the distinct feeling from reading the book that Friedman is drinking the company kool-aid when he visits these places in India. He is OK as a reporter but that's about it. |
