Default NIT ??

I know what a "Nit" is, but does it stand for anything ?

LAG = Loose Agressive
TAG = Tight Agressive
NIT = ??

I've checked the list of abbreviations, but cant find this one.

National Invitation Tournament

but seriously, it, until recently, did not refer to a style of play. It refers to a player who continually is involved in minute, trivial, unnecessary, and unjustified criticism or faultfinding.

Comes from the term 'nit picking', which originally meant the process if picking nits (lice) out of hair.

The more recent usage as a style of play (weak tight / rock) came when newer players heard the term 'nit' and thought it refered to the style of play that 'nits' usually display.

I have always assumed "nit" was a shortform of "nitwit".

I'm only new around here, but I've gotten the impression it means a very tight player, as Angus said.

Looks like the word is slowly gaining a new definition, IMO. Similar to the way that the meaning of "cold deck" changed at some point in the last 10 years.

Well, I indeed only picked up the term "nit" recently and it most certainly refers to an unimaginably tight player.

Here are two good older articles by Daniel Negreanu about what a "nit" used to mean.

Still does. Players with less than a couple of years live experience can use the 'new' meaning if they want, but don't expect the veterans to change.

Same with 'cold deck'. It doesn't mean 'getting a cold run of cards'. It means getting cheated with a stacked deck.

What a nit has come to mean is somebody who plays super tight and can easily be pushed off hands
