NL taking over our casino
There were some posts a while ago about whether or not NLHE was taking over cardrooms. I said at the time that it seemed to be the case at the casino I go to. When I started playing about 3 years ago, there were limit games at several levels from 2/4 to 20/40, several with full kill, and 3/6 nl. Then 1/2 nl came along and the limit games started to disappear until only 2/4 and 4/8 were left. The bigger games moved to another location of the same company. But last time I was there, the only game running was 1/2 nl. The 10/20 and 20/40 were gone.
Today I went to play in the regular Wed 4:15 pm tournament. I usually go around noon and play 4/8 and then the tournament. But today there were no 4/8 games, only 2/4 which I don't like but there were 6 tables I think of 1/2 nl. In fact they finally called me for the 4/8 game at about 4:30, after the tournament had started. Is this happening everywhere? I like nl but I find it very volatile and sometimes I just want to relax with a little 4/8 especially before a tournament. If this continues, I'll have to start playing at the other casino in town (different company) which still has limit games but which I don't like going to because of their ownership. |

What casino is that? The same thing is happening here in MI. They have trouble keeping limit games full during the week

Re: NL taking over our casino
This is happening everywhere. The fish want "that all-in game I see on TV." That way they can pretend like they have large huevos because they played it and they got to say "I'm all-in." The pros and regulars (whose huevos are at least big enough to say they have a pair) who are there regularly to start games usually play NL now.
I said it before and I'll say it again, hold'em killed poker and no limit killed hold'em. Stud an 'nem are virtually dead these days. Most of the limit games are gone too. The majority of vegas rooms now spread 3-6 and 1-2 no limit or something close to that. 2-4 is kept around so that the casino can still attract the stupidest, dumbest, ugliest and broke-est mo-fo's to the casino too. Re: NL taking over our casino
A reason that no one ever mentions is poker is a pretty dull game for people who are there to gamble. They are there to play, not to fold. No limit gives them more of a thrill than limit. They get the buzz of putting their whole stack in.
Out here, they have been raising the buy in for capped games because people want to gamble more. It's a mistake, but we give the people what they want. 2/4 is poker bingo. All the fun with a low price. |

Re: NL taking over our casino
10/20 and 20/40 can be found at Edgewater Casino, right beside B.C. Place. Usually 1 table of each, ful of regulars. Hope it helps. RR is almost strictly NL now

Re: NL taking over our casino
It would not surprise me if PLO or badugi replaced NL or put a major dent in it. I think we're going to see a rise in high-variance draw games at the lower limits.

Re: NL taking over our casino
Matt,
Do you think PLO will really fly in the Vegas market? I still have high hopes(dropping fast though)that a mix game in the PL style will make an appearance and take on some of the grander NL has at this time. In fact, any PL game would be nice to see more frequently. |

[/ QUOTE ] Matt: You know I love Badugi, but I don't think your even close to right on this one. Low limit players want to gamble, but they want to feel as if they are in control even if they are not - Badugi is not the game for low limit gamblers. I do however agree that 1-1PLO and low limit badugi are beginning to make its way into low limit mixed games, they both seem to be popular choices - but generally the opponents in these games at least think they are good at poker in general, and usually play much higher NL or limit Hold'em as their main game. |
