Theory: standard raise preflop
What is your standard raise preflop ? So far I have always raised to 4x +1bb/limper, but I wonder if it is better than raising 3x or 3.5x. What do you think is the best choice and why ? Has anyone tried different raises over a large sample and saw significative difference in their results ?

Re: Theory: standard raise preflop
3.5xBB+1/limper is optimal as it gives the BB/limpers 2:1 pot odds to see the flop, and I think the 4x+1 formula came from people that play on sites without a bet pot button.
As for why we want to give the BB exactly 2:1 I'm not entirely sure, but it's worked so far for me. |

It's really just personal preference. I rock 4x+1.

3.5bb at 1/2+
4bb at .5/1 because i don't wanna look too pedantic raising to $3.50 and stuff, so just raise it to $4 |

Re: Theory: standard raise preflop
For 6-handed my raise is 3.5x if I open, 4x behind one limper, and 5x behind two limpers. If I raise from the blinds after limpers it's generally at least 5-6x.
For 3-handed or HU I raise 3x, cause my opening range is way wider, and I wanna call 3-bets in position lighter with more room to play after the flop. Like if I open 4x, a reraise is gonna be anywhere from 12-16x. If I open 3x then a reraise will be 9-12x, resulting in a pot that's about 2/3 the size. I've heard suggestions that 2.5x or even minraising is good for this purpose, but I can't see myself minraising. |
