Default making calls from US to Spain

I'm in US with a US cell phone (Sprint). I need to call someone in Madrid who has cellular # nnn-nnn-nnn

According to Sprint, I should dial 011-034-nnn-nnn-nnn. But this always gives me an incorrect # message. I am in email contact with the person so I know the cell phone is correct if you are in Spain.

Anyone know what's going on ?
