Occasionally I will have someone ask me about the poker books I read on my off time at work but anything beyond a topical conversation about poker is met with a glassy stare.

[ QUOTE ]
I wish I had kept my mouth shut. I finally told my roomates how I do in poker and now they all want lessons. They all want to put $50 online and have me help them turn it into a billion dollars overnight. Or they want to give me money and take a piece of me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Charge them 50/hr and ask that they spread word around that you are giving lessons.

I don't like discussing it.

1. They think you're a degenerate.
2. They don't believe you.
3. They believe you and are jealous and then start attacking you: "Well that's great - but you're just exploiting people. What are you doing for the world?"
4. They believe you want want a piece of you.

Rarely can anybody just accept it and move on or have a passive conversation about it.

I think it's fun to talk to other people about it. It really shows the difference in how much poker players value money relative to non-players. I can remember when I thought $100 was a substantial amount of money too. Poker has just completely desensitized me to money. It's pretty funny actually. When I notice that I don't even get too excited about $1,000 swings. Five years ago I would be hyperventilating either way.

I tried explaining why I hate talking it to my parents and why I don't like them telling people about my poker. Basically I said almost everyone thinks they understand poker/gambling. They may not believe they are experts but nearly everyone has some fundamental understanding and strongly believes they are correct. The problem is they are all wrong.

Normally I do not like talking about how much I win/lose for obvious reasons but it annoys when some people come up to me and say stuff like "what are you going to do with an arts degree", When I graduate with an engineering degree I'll be making 60k a year and I just want to be like STFU I can make that in like 4 months working like 3 hours day.

On the other hand I try to explain it a bit too my closer friends, not really financially but theory stuff so they have a better understanding of what I do why I win etc...

I'll rephrase. She's not interested in what happens when I book a winner. Completely indifferent to that. But when I don't have a great day she demands to know exactly how much was lost and then proceeds to have a giant freakout about it. I remember the first time I lost $500 in a day. She would...not...shut...up about it for a week.

She also, always always always, says "How much did you lose?" when I come home. She just assumes I lost. Real confidence booster, honey. Very supportive of you.

FWIW, I'm doing 1.2 BB/hr at live 6/12 for the year. So yeah.
