Why do they donk here and what do they have?
I raise in position preflop and get one caller. Flop comes something that surely missed everyone, like QQ9. The guy leads into me for 1/2 pot.
What do people do this with and why? Should I ever do this? Is this different from when people lead out for a minbet in the same situation? |

Re: Why do they donk here and what do they have?
I like to bet out here with a Q, OESD, air or FD to build pot. Maybe a 9 sometimes too depending on opponent. If you've got a good hand or a good draw, building the pot is the only way to get paid a little. And if people see you betting all the time, they'll even play with you sometimes with junk. I like other people to see me getting money in the pot frequently.
FWIW, I'm also a donk. |

Re: Why do they donk here and what do they have?
IME it's usually a 9, JT, or a smaller pair trying to "see where he's at". A small % will donk out the Q here, so as always it's still very player dependent.

Re: Why do they donk here and what do they have?
So do you guys think people donk out with air, 9 and JT and then fold to a raise often?
The reason I ask is that, when an unknown player does this to me, I used to fold. Then I decided that the donk didn't make much sense and that they ought to be a little afraid of my range, so I started raising unknowns here every time. They seem to fold ~90% of the time and get really aggro the rest of the time. So, I've been raise/folding in this spot, and I'm ahead on the play in general, but I never get to showdown, so I don't know what they have. I was beginning to think it was air almost all of the time, with the villain thinking that that flop probably missed me and I might give up. |

Re: Why do they donk here and what do they have?
I donk this with a Q, air, and JT. I try to make sure the air donks are proportional to the legit and draw donks. I do it because I want to be paid with my set, and oop you end up getting played rather than doing the playing unless you donk.
You have to pay attention to what a call means, or else you will lose alot of money leading out of position and then simply giving up if they call. Hence the attempt at balance. If done right, they have no way to tell if they are raising a set, a solid draw, or air. If they guess right, and raise, I fold. if they guess wrong, I reraise or if I think he's aggressive enough c/r the turn, and i call with the draw, usually. Overall, I am doing this to generate big pots with my big hands. I loathe not getting paid more than I fear betting oop. |
